5 Different Types of Romance Books to Read Around Valentine's Day

As a seasonal reader, I tend to gravitate towards particular types of books as each season or holiday comes around. This year I was trying to decide on a romance to read leading up to Valentine’s Day but was having a difficult time narrowing down my list.

It took me some time to figure out why, but then it occurred to me that maybe it was because there are so many types of romance books out there. And since I enjoy reading books from a wide variety of genres, what I was really having a hard time picking was the type of romance I was in the mood to pick up. So I thought today would be a great opportunity to discuss some of the different types of romance novels that are out there. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but focuses on some of these types that tend to intrigue me the most.

This is quite possibly my favorite type of romance, as it incorporates a prominent mystery, thriller, or suspense plot. Which, if you’ve following this blog for a while, you’ll know are my favorite genres of books. The combination of an intriguing mystery along with some romantic tension definitely works for me!

Contemporary Romance

Probably one of the most popular classifications within the romance genre, these are books that take place in our modern time, or more specifically, anything set after World War II. There’s a wide range of sub-genres and themes within this type, but I tend to enjoy these in the summertime, and therefore go for the lighter beach-read variety.

Historical Romance

In the direct opposite direction of contemporary romance, historical romance takes place in a setting in the past. This also contains a wide range of themes and sub-genres that focus on different time periods and types of romances. I particularly love these books when they build up the setting to transport the reader into a completely different time and place.

Chick-lit Romance

Although I’m not particularly fond of the title “chick-lit,” I do enjoy these types of books. This genre addresses issues of modern womanhood and typically does so in a lighthearted or humorous way. One of my favorite aspects of this type of romance is that while it does exist within the story, other relationships with family and friends is just as or more important, making for a more realistic reading experience.

Paranormal Romance

This one surprised me! I don’t think I’d read anything in this genre until a friend pushed the Twilight series into my hands some years ago, but I wound up enjoying it more than I expected. These books involve experiences that can’t be explained scientifically, including supernatural creatures, time travel, and psychic abilities. Some of these go a little too far for my taste, but that can happen in any genre.

  1. I’m always on the look out for books that would appeal to asexual or aromatic folks. Honestly, I didn’t realize asexual/aromantic people were so common until I started blogging, and since they’ve I’ve befriended many. For that reason, I’m always a little trepidatious around Valentine’s Day.
